#DigiWritMo Day 27 MindMap Skeleton


Reflecting back over the last couple of weeks these were the first associations that came to my mind when thinking about transmedia story-telling. I want to keep building it.

Does anyone know a way to collaborate on a mindmap? I tried so many mindmapping programmes, but that’s years ago and didn’t like any of them very much. Ended up with iMindMap because at the time it was the only one I could find offering 3D version. So what are your experiences?



#DigiWriMo Day 24 Language, Sounds and Sausage Rolls


In the #DigiWriMo community we began discussing language and the internet, based on Greg McVerry’s piece:

Well, and how Twitter chats go, one thing led to another, and we ended up with favourite words in ‘another’ language. So I have–of course–choosen four German words. Weltaneignung, Bildung, Mietzekatze, and Erbernbebbm (the link leads to Evernote audio-files)… the last two only to prove that we do indeed have NICE words in German. *She glances at Maha and coughs*

So Weltaneignung and Bildung are two of these German nouns that are actually more concepts than entities. They tend to be more fluid than let’s say: chair. So.

Weltaneignung very, very compressed: is the ability and motivation to take agency of ones learning and engagement with the world, environment (social, physical, virtual), to take ownership and control.

Bildung: is roughly education, but not.

‘Bildung (education) stands for the result of learning, however, is neither a fixed, nor an end-result focused approach. Bildung (education) is in fact a complex state of abilities that is continuously re-negotiated, added onto, changed, and questioned—utilizing a flexible, critical mind that enables Weltaneignung (Laewen & Andres, 2002). Weltaneignung simply translated stands for ownership of the world, but it encompasses life-competences, control, relevance, ownership, and responsible engagement with the world. In other words Bildung (education) is the process of developing cultural competences to gain cultural capital. It is a comprehensive concept that understands the learner as actively engaged in, or as an agent for their learning and development (Laewen & Andres, 2002).’

Sorry for quoting myself here (if you want more search my dissertation, it’s under the publication tabs). These both words are really important for me because they do not exist in English, at all. And trying to explain them is really complicated. It’s partially to do with this dissociation from self. How do you explain something that simply does not exist at all? So the means of language are reductionary; as the cultural background for these concepts is missing and I always feel, no matter how I try to explain, the result remains shallow.

Erbernbebbm: this is Saxonian dialect for Kartoffelmus (yes you can see the similarities between ‘High German’ and Saxon dialect) … Mashed Potatoes anyone?

Now follow the ‘spelunking’ train of thought …

#DigiWriMo Day 23: Transmedia StoryTelling

So this week is Transmedia Storytelling week

I haven’t come up with an actual story. My story for now is about the act of writing—or is it more appropriate to say creating?—a transmedia story. The story about telling, showing, creating, painting, writing, drawing, thinking, or developing [insert more verbs here] a transmedia story. In doing so I am using various freely available gadgets, and each chapter of the story, reflects one of the gadgets. So without further ado let’s see how the story is going to tell herself.

Second Chapter: Trying Gifmaker

This is a neat website not only can you create gifs, determine framerates etc. One can also combine already existing gifs or create videos. So far the experience was good. Straight forward, no fuss, easy to use.

Learning Outcome

Should have probably reframed the pictures or taken my proper camera using the tripot. Live and learn, live and learn … *two fingers against my forehead + dramatic face-expression*.


Third chapter: experimenting with: Screen Recorder Robot Lite

Yup, the free version. It lets you record 600 seconds for free. You can choose to keep or ditch the audio-track before exporting it. I cannot remember when I actually installed the programme. Only that I barely used it for the restricted recording time, and so far it has not been worth my while using a pay-for version as I hardly make use of it.

Yeah, I know, catch 22.

Learning Outcome:

Strange how one is never truly aware of the the typo-correction, while writing, until an unscripted recording happens. Also I should probably use bigger font size for the ‘over the shoulder’ writing.

Forth Chapter: so there are leaves…

I so! so! so! wanted to spell words with the leaves the wind has driven into our building, but was way too self-conscious. This gadget by the way is truly freeware, no hidden purchases, no dubious sources, even Sophos (by the way great free app for Android) confirmed 100% security. Also graphic design and colours are just amazing. Yup. So this medium is today’s winner.

Learning Outcome

Maybe I am braver tomorrow?



#DigiWriMo Days 12-15

A long weekend in Munich

I left a stormy Scotland to spend a long weekend in Munich with family, spreading digital literacies. The following two picture collages where made by my 2 year old niece. She learned really quickly to move objects and make them bigger or smaller:

#DigiWriMo Day 10

And I am back on WordPress.
For today’s visual text I played with Bazaart  (iPad app) recommended by Wendy Taleo, in the G+ group of #digiwrimo

So not only did I create virtual scrap book poems but I also made meta-poems using some of my analogue material translating it into the virtual space. This deconstruction of my poems had a strange effect. Recontextualising them: for an audience unknown, for a space inconceivable in its vastness, removing and adding layers–of meaning, as well as layers of visualisation, enabled me to add dimensions to my poetry I have not yet explored.

So without further ado, here are some of them.

This is a bad sign only day 7 and I already have to write two posts because there was no time whatsoever yesterday.
